Gaggle of Gagas 2010
[info]wicked0witch wrote in [info]dragoncon
Inspired by a group my friends did at Otakon, i've decided to see if people would be interested in doing a "Gaggle of Gagas" group at D*C. Everyone would be doing a different Lady Gaga outfit (since she has so many!) and we'd meet-up for a photogathering.

Would anyone else be interested in joining this group? I bet we can get more Gagas than Otakon did!

Mod post: DVD release party tomorrow!
[info]starlady42 wrote in [info]ontd_startrek
Okay, GQMFs, tomorrow's the big day... the official release date of the STAR TREK DVD and Blu-Ray! You know what that means...

Glitter Words

starting at 12PM (noon) GMT/UTC tomorrow, Nov. 17! (Use this site to figure out what time that is for you.)

1) Yes, it'll be a party post, but let's make it a DVD/Blu-Ray-specific party post... so less of the usual "let's-break-LJ-as-quickly-as-possible" shenanigans and more discussion/gifs/macros about the movie, special features, etc. Standard pics-per-comment guidelines will apply.

2) Of course, you should definitely feel free to discuss your movie-watching all day long! But, we will also have a COORDINATED MOVIE VIEWING starting at 11PM (23:00) GMT on Tuesday. So, plan to cue up your DVD and start at that time so we can all watch and discuss together!
a) If there is still lots of room in the dvd release party post for comments, we'll do the coordinated watch there; otherwise, there'll be a new post which'll go up a few minutes before 11PM GMT.
b) There will be another coordinated watch this weekend for folks who can't make this one; it'll start at 1PM (13:00) GMT on Saturday. Hopefully these two times will give GQMFs around the world a chance to watch together!

3) SHOW US YOUR TREK! Take pictures of yourself with your DVD, put your DVD with the rest of your shrine Trek stuff and take photos -- share your excitement with your fellow GQMFs!

4) If you've posted anything about the DVD or blu-ray in the last few weeks, please check and make sure it's tagged with the shiny new 'dvd' tag so that people can find it easily!

5) If you're one of the lucky ones who already has your copy and can't wait until tomorrow, there's some discussion
here to tide you over.

SEE YOU ALL AT THE PARTY!!
I'll bring cake.

Baffled! starring Leonard Nimoy in its entirety!

Youtube playlist in 11 parts

The whole thing clocks in at one hour, thirty-six minutes.

imdb Baffled! info

Description: Race car driver suffers from visions where he sees people killed. An ESP expert believes that his visions will really happen.

This is from 1973 so you'll get lots of Nimoy in turtleneck sweaters and delightfully shaggy hair and sideburns. He almost takes off his shirt in the second part to take a shower, but no go. He *almost* kisses the girl in part 6, but again no go. lol Damn them!

There are however, wonderful shots of him *sopping* wet, jangly 70s opening credits theme music, BAMF driving of cars, antique and otherwise, a genuine FUG HAT!!, credible UST with his co-star, sweeping English landscapes and an interesting plot involving psychic visions and satanic occult-ish skullduggery.

My self-serving need hope is that some GQMF will watch this and bestow wonderful gifs and screencaps of this pilot for fapping research the whole community. XD

The End Of Something Awesome
[info]ladysprite
This past weekend was my last time playing in Threads of Damocles, a campaign LARP that I've been part of for three years. The game was originally only intended to run for those three years, and while it's continuing on from here... this is what I wanted. I've told my stories, my character has finished her arc, and I'd rather stop here, while it's still fun and good, than let things go on to the point of burnout.

All the same, though, I am going to miss this game like fire. I know, intellectually, that there have been ups and downs, and that everything wasn't always perfect, but right now all I remember are the good bits - and that's something wonderful, and says some pretty amazing things about the campaign. I have had so many positive experiences, met so many incredible people, been part of so many cool scenes and stories, that I can't keep them all in my head at once. I had the best character, worked with the best players and the best GMs, and played in the best plots - I don't know how anything I play again will ever be quite as amazing.... and that's okay.

I'll miss the people, and the game, and the story, but right now most of all I'll miss my character. Last night, as I was taking off her necklaces and washing off her tattoos for the last time, it finally hit home. It's not fair to her to keep going - she deserves a break of her own, too - but still, she was pretty awesome. So, goodbye to...

Miryam O'Shaugnessy Laughing Fox
Daughter of Kathleen O'Shaugnessy (prostitute, Cowboy Pete's Palace of Earthly Delights) and Joseph White Crow (medicine man, Sac & Fox tribe)
Bartender, card dealer, and dowser for Maddy's Oasis
Core member of the Tribe of Three
Founder of the MacRorie Tribe, chief of the Seven Nations, and ambassador to the government of the former Midwestern United States.
Shaman of Fox, and sometimes Thunderbird, Hawk, and Gitche-Manitou
Scion of Christ, heir to the throne of DeGaulle's France, and Coffee Filter For Jesus
Godmother to Finn Thorne, who may or may not be a Mystical Child of the Morrigan
Beloved of Andrew Matthew Thorn, as much as a sociopath can love anyone, and John E. Grayer, even though it's complicated.
Friend of angels, dead pirates, voodoo priestesses, technomages, emotionally conflicted pilots, London werewolves, drug-dealing shadowmen, Mafia princesses, depressive cyborgs, temporal physics prodigies, stodgy immortals, Funfair refugees, serial-killing vampires, pompous windbags, kitsune half-breeds, diplomats, generals, and almost anyone else who would slow down enough for her to say hi.

Go. Have fun. Drink from the fountain of youth, wander the world with your lover and your tribe. And try not to wreak too much havoc in the process.

A little is okay, though.

So I went on Myspace randomly today and the layout has been changed to promote the DVD, I don't know if it's just the UK site but it was a pleasant surprise!

EDIT: the following code adds Lensflare to your facebook page. Wasn't this the code that we used to see the embedded interview weeks back?

press up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, enter key then press up and down...and you have to refresh the page to make it stop.

Keeping with the holiday theme =)

I covered this a bit with my birthday present question a while back, but I thought I'd think through it more thoroughly. There's an easy pick, namely my 486 from... 95? 94? I had been bugging my parents for a computer for AGES, since I had been on my Dad's old 4-color-but-in-grayscale 8086 that could only barely run Windows 3.0 for as long as I could remember. All my friends had at least *something* better, and naturally games were the driving force. The Secret of Monkey Island, and Doom, were games that two of my neighbors had that drew me over to their houses on a regular basis the fall before. Finally I got my 486, was ecstatic in setting it up, and discovered Descent entirely on my own and trained myself to play 6dof shooters from a nice and early age, heading off the nausea and disorientation problems a lot of people have.

This also stepped up my computing skills strong. I was poking around with BASIC and *gasp* DOS batch file programming on the old computer. If there was a menu program that could be configured, customized, or written from scratch, *I* had done it. I had mastered the art of getting to my favorite games =). But stepping up to the 486 I started trying to do game programming of my own in BASIC (yeah, yeah) and finally had a torrid love-affair with C in high school, culminating with a rough Windows version of RoboRally, which caught enough attention to net me the senior class prize for the Computer Science department.

I have to say it was my love of gaming that really drove my curiosity about computing. It did eventually develop independent of the games, but if it weren't for the games, I might never have learned from an early age what was possible, and have been motivated to study as much of it as I did. I'm happy my parents didn't suppress my PC usage as much as they did my console usage, even though I *know* they wanted to.

My holidays have a lot of hectic travel. I'm using GCal to keep all the information in one place and easy to see, changing things as they evolve. As it stands there have been a few changes since my last post. Chicago's gotten pushed back to (probably) Jan 4-17. I have (developing) travel plans now for NYE, Dec 31-Jan 3. And my brother can't make it down for the 12th because he has finals. I still don't know if he'll come down at all (he could from the 17th, but I was going to go up to NY on the 20th. Maybe that will get pushed back to around the 23rd and Nick can come down... but either way he's missing Revels).

Aside from figuring out where I'm going to be, which is a monumental undertaking, I *do* have to figure out what to get for people. This will likely be a much lighter year than last year, considering my financial situation. Probably at the $20 level for family and trying to get creative with what-I'll-get/if-I-get for a few friends.

I *do* want to do holiday cards this year, but that requires some planning which I haven't done yet. Getting cards, writing the letter, sending them out.

I have my own wish list for the holidays, it's my regular Amazon list. There's a few things on there that are priorities for myself if they're still unacquired come the 25th. QaF, namely, if I can afford it. Maybe Doctor Who. I know I wanted to get S2 or 4 to bring to Sera, but considering I'm only there for 2 weeks anyway, it doesn't seem that necessary.

Mainly I will just be happy with my holiday travel and seeing all the people I will see. If things don't get done, or if money doesn't get spent, it's no big loss. Being around people is what makes the holidays awesome for me.

MONDAY MEET-UP PLANNING POST/RECAP
[info]tokyo_pt wrote in [info]ontd_startrek
MEET-UP PLANNING

This is the weekly post where members can plan meetups for movies, conventions, and misc events.

And with the DVD out in several countries, and about to be release in several others, this is the perfect reason for a meet-up!

THIS THREAD IS NOT THE PLANNING OR DISCUSSION AREA; just specify the city you're in and link to a post in your personal journal where your neighbors can plan the meetup with you.

If you're not organizing a meet-up, but looking for other GQMFs near you doing one, check out the list of communities dedicated to these meet-ups under the cut. )

RECAP

For those of you who were able to document your meetups, please post your pics and recaps here, or better yet link to a post in your own LJ so that the comment pages here don't break the internet.

Even if you didn't take any pictures, please feel free to recount the awesomeness of meeting with other GQMF's, any funny conversations or accidental meeting of other Star Trek geeks fans. lol
